Vitiligo
DermatologyOverview
Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by patches of skin that lose pigment and turn white, usually with irregular borders, and can affect the inside of the mouth and nose, often symmetrically on both sides of the body. The exact cause is unknown but is thought to involve genetic susceptibility triggered by environmental factors such as autoimmune disease, leading to damage of the pigment-producing cells. It is not contagious.
Symptoms
- White patches
- Well-defined borders
- Symmetrical distribution
- Whitening of hair
- Spreading
Treatment
Treatment focuses on topical medication and phototherapy to control progression and promote repigmentation, requiring long-term standardized dermatology care and diligent sun protection.
Dietary advice
Eat a balanced diet with appropriate intake of foods rich in copper, zinc, and quality protein, and take care to protect against sun exposure.
