Diphtheria

Overview

Diphtheria is an infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It ranges from mild to severe, characterized by grayish-white pseudomembranes in the throat that can obstruct the airway, and toxin-related complications such as myocarditis and neuritis.

Symptoms

• Grayish-white pharyngeal pseudomembrane
• Sore throat
• Fever
• Hoarseness
• Difficulty breathing

Treatment

Treatment centers on early administration of diphtheria antitoxin to neutralize the toxin combined with antibiotics, with strict isolation and close monitoring of cardiac and respiratory status.

Dietary advice

Eat light, cool, easily swallowed liquids or semi-liquids, drink plenty of water, and avoid coarse, hard, and irritating foods.
