Alopecia Areata

Overview

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease characterized by sudden, localized patchy hair loss, related to genetic, immune, and psychological factors. It presents as well-defined round or oval bald patches with normal underlying skin, and some cases recover spontaneously.

• Round bald patches
• Well-defined borders
• Smooth scalp
• No subjective symptoms
• May progress

Treatment

Often related to stress and immunity; treated with topical or intralesional corticosteroids and minoxidil to promote hair regrowth.

Dietary advice

Balanced nutrition with adequate quality protein and trace elements; avoid staying up late and anxiety.
