Phimosis

Overview

Phimosis is a condition in which a tight or adherent foreskin cannot be retracted to expose the glans. In children an unretractable foreskin is normal, with over 90% retractable by age 7, while persistent cases in adolescents and adults may cause pain and increased risk of infection.

Symptoms

• Non-retractable foreskin
• Difficulty urinating
• Narrow foreskin opening
• Recurrent infection
• Smegma accumulation

Treatment

Circumcision is performed for those with recurrent infection or difficulty urinating, with attention to local hygiene.

Dietary advice

Light diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy irritant foods.
