Achalasia is a rare disorder in which the smooth muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax, keeping it closed so food cannot pass and stagnates in the esophagus. Its cause is not fully understood.

Treatment
Options include balloon dilation, endoscopic myotomy, or surgery, while medications only provide temporary relief.
Dietary advice
Chew slowly and eat warm soft foods in small frequent meals, avoiding very cold or very hot foods.
