Overview

A chronic inflammatory papulosquamous condition of the skin, mouth, and tongue. It features itchy purplish-red papules and can be diagnosed by microscopic examination of a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Purplish-red papules
  • Itching
  • White lacy patterns in the mouth
  • Polygonal shape

Treatment

Topical corticosteroids are used, with oral antihistamines for marked itching and systemic corticosteroids or immunomodulators for widespread disease.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, quit smoking and limit alcohol, and avoid spicy, irritating foods.
