Flat Feet

Orthopedics

Overview

Flat feet is a foot deformity in which the sole is essentially flat with a poorly developed arch, so the entire sole contacts the ground. The lack of arch cushioning increases the contact area, causing pain after prolonged walking, though most cases require no treatment.

Symptoms

  • Collapsed arch
  • Foot fatigue
  • Pain when walking
  • Prone to ankle sprains

Treatment

Treatment is mainly orthotic insoles and foot muscle exercises, with surgery considered for severe cases.

Dietary advice

Balanced diet, weight control, and supplementation of calcium and protein.
