Overview

Viral encephalitis is inflammation of the brain, usually acute and most often caused by viral infection. It presents with fever, headache, and impaired consciousness.

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Impaired consciousness
  • Seizures

Treatment

Give prompt antiviral therapy, control intracranial pressure and seizures, and strengthen symptomatic supportive care.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, easily digestible, high-calorie diet and ensure adequate fluid and nutrient intake.
