Chondromalacia patellae is softening and degeneration of the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap, commonly related to overuse and being overweight. It causes pain in the front of the knee that worsens with activities such as climbing stairs.
Symptoms
- Pain in front of the knee
- Worse going up and down stairs
- Joint clicking
- Knee buckling
Treatment
Treatment is mainly rest, quadriceps exercises, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory analgesics, avoiding prolonged squatting and stair climbing.
Dietary advice
Balanced diet, weight control, and calcium and protein supplementation to protect the joints.
