Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Overview

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a cancer arising in the nasopharynx. It is more common in certain regions such as Southeast Asia and Africa, and genetic factors are now considered the main contributor. Microscopically it is classified into keratinizing, non-keratinizing, and undifferentiated types.

Symptoms

• Blood-tinged nasal discharge on sniffing back
• Neck mass
• Nasal congestion
• Ear fullness
• Headache

Treatment

Radiotherapy is the mainstay, often combined with chemotherapy in intermediate and advanced stages; prognosis is good with early detection.

Dietary advice

Strengthen nutrition with high-protein, high-vitamin, easily digestible foods, and avoid salted fish and preserved products.
