Puerperal infection is a bacterial infection of the genital tract following childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion. It typically presents within 24 hours of delivery with fever above 38 C, chills, lower abdominal pain, and foul-smelling vaginal discharge, most commonly as uterine infection.
Symptoms
- Fever
- Lower abdominal pain
- Foul-smelling lochia
- Increased lochia
Treatment
Start adequate doses of antibiotics as early as possible to control infection, with local care and drainage, plus rest and nutritional support.
Dietary advice
Eat a high-protein, high-vitamin, easily digestible diet, drink plenty of fluids, and ensure adequate nutrition to aid recovery.
