Pneumoconiosis
PulmonologyOverview
Pneumoconiosis is a general term for interstitial lung diseases caused by inhaling dust (such as ash, silica, or asbestos), leading to interstitial fibrosis. It includes silicosis, asbestosis, and coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Patients are usually exposed long-term to dusty environments.
Symptoms
- Cough
- Coughing up phlegm
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Chest pain
Treatment
The key is to leave the dusty environment and use proper occupational protection. There is currently no cure; treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, preventing and treating complications, and pulmonary rehabilitation, with symptomatic management of infections.
Dietary advice
Strengthen nutrition with adequate high-quality protein and fresh fruits and vegetables to boost resistance. Drink plenty of water to help expel phlegm, quit smoking, and avoid spicy, irritating foods.
