Traumatic Shock

Traumatic Shock

Emergency

Overview

Shock is acute circulatory failure in which the effective circulating blood volume sharply decreases and tissue perfusion is severely inadequate after severe injury, leading to cellular hypoxia and dysfunction of vital organs. Traumatic shock typically presents with pale complexion, cold clammy limbs, low blood pressure, weak pulse, and altered consciousness.

Symptoms

  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Thin rapid pulse
  • Pale complexion
  • Cold clammy limbs
  • Reduced urine output

Treatment

Rapidly stop bleeding and give fluid resuscitation to expand volume, manage the primary trauma, correct hypoxia and acidosis, and maintain perfusion of vital organs.

Dietary advice

Fasting during the emergency phase; after the condition stabilizes, gradually transition from a liquid diet, with a high-protein diet to promote recovery.
