Infectious Mononucleosis

Overview

Infectious mononucleosis is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Most people are infected in childhood with mild or no symptoms. In young adults it causes fever, sore throat, cervical lymph node enlargement, and fatigue. Most recover within two to four weeks, though fatigue can last for months. The liver or spleen may enlarge, with splenic rupture in about 1% of cases. It is spread mainly through saliva.

Treatment

Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive; rest, avoid vigorous activity to prevent splenic rupture, and watch for complications.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, easily digestible, nutritious diet, drink plenty of water, and ensure adequate high-quality protein and vitamin intake.
