Pituitary Adenoma

Overview

A pituitary adenoma is a benign tumor of the anterior pituitary gland, accounting for about 10-15% of intracranial tumors. It can cause endocrine disorders due to abnormal hormone secretion, or symptoms such as headache and visual and visual-field disturbances from compression of surrounding structures.

Treatment

Treatment depends on tumor type: prolactinomas are usually treated first with medication, while other types often require transsphenoidal surgical resection, sometimes with adjunctive radiotherapy. Monitor hormones and imaging regularly after treatment.
