Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Overview

Herpes zoster (shingles) is a viral skin disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), distributed along peripheral nerves and characterized by clustered small blisters, often with marked localized nerve pain. Some patients continue to have nerve pain in the affected area after the rash resolves (postherpetic neuralgia). It occurs when the virus, dormant in nerve cells after a prior chickenpox infection, reactivates.

Symptoms

• Banded blisters
• Stabbing pain
• Burning pain
• Erythema
• Fatigue

Treatment

Early oral antiviral medication with symptomatic pain relief can shorten the course and reduce nerve pain, so prompt medical care is advised.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet, ensure adequate quality protein and vitamins, get plenty of rest, and drink plenty of water.
