Herpes Simplex

Overview

Herpes simplex is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Depending on the site of infection, it manifests as cold sores, facial herpes, or genital herpes, characterized by clustered blisters with burning and tingling that tend to recur.

Symptoms

• Clustered blisters
• Burning and tingling
• Erythematous base
• Perioral or genital location
• Prone to recurrence

Treatment

Caused by herpes simplex virus; early oral or topical antivirals such as aciclovir are used, keeping lesions clean and dry.

Dietary advice

A light diet avoiding spicy irritants, with plenty of vitamin-rich foods.
