Erysipelas

Overview

Erysipelas is an acute bacterial skin infection of the dermis, mainly caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, resulting in inflammation.

Symptoms

• Sharply demarcated erythema
• Burning, swelling, and pain
• Tense, shiny surface
• Accompanying fever
• Regional lymph node swelling

Treatment

Caused by streptococcal infection. Prompt, adequate antibiotic therapy is needed, along with limb elevation and bed rest.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy and greasy foods.
