Epilepsy

Overview

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, which are repeated episodes of abnormal, excessive neuronal activity in the cerebral cortex. Seizures may cause physical injury and vary in severity and duration.

Symptoms

• Convulsions
• Loss of consciousness
• Foaming at the mouth
• Limb rigidity
• Upward eye rolling

Treatment

Management centers on long-term standardized anti-epileptic medication. Patients must take drugs on time as directed, follow up regularly, and never stop medication on their own. Surgery may be evaluated for drug-resistant epilepsy.

Dietary advice

Eat a regular, balanced diet, and avoid overeating and alcohol. Reduce stimulating drinks such as strong tea and coffee, and ensure adequate sleep.
