Chilblains (Frostbite Sores)

Overview

Chilblains are lesions caused by impaired local blood circulation after skin exposure to cold. A common non-contagious winter condition, they typically appear on the extremities and exposed areas such as the hands, feet, nose, ears, and cheeks, presenting as localized purplish-red swollen patches with itching, and heal gradually as the weather warms.

Symptoms

• Dark red swelling
• Itching
• Worsens with warmth
• Common on hands, feet, and ears
• May ulcerate

Treatment

Caused by cold and dampness. Keep warm, apply topical circulation-promoting ointments, and prevent infection if ulcerated.

Dietary advice

Eat warm foods to ensure adequate caloric intake, and keep the limbs warm in winter.
