Oral Thrush

Overview

Oral thrush (oral candidiasis) is inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by Candida albicans. It is a common oral infection in infants and toddlers, especially in the neonatal period. It is often caused by inadequately sterilized feeding equipment, an unclean nipple, or contaminated fingers of the feeder, and can also be acquired through the birth canal.

Symptoms

• White patches in the mouth
• Not easily wiped off
• Refusal to eat
• Crying
• Drooling

Treatment

Maintain oral cleanliness, apply topical antifungal medication as directed, and sterilize feeding utensils and bottles.

Dietary advice

Feed with breast milk or formula, give some warm water after feeding to clean the mouth, and avoid overly hot foods.
