Tinnitus
ENTOverview
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no external sound is present, often described as ringing, tapping, hissing, or roaring. The most common cause is noise-induced hearing loss; other causes include ear infections, cardiovascular disease, Meniere's disease, brain tumors, and certain medications. Over time it often worsens and can cause low mood, anxiety, or difficulty concentrating.
Symptoms
- Ringing in the ears
- Hearing loss
- Ear fullness
- Insomnia
- Irritability
Treatment
The underlying cause must be identified and treated. Avoid noise and fatigue, combine sound therapy with psychological counseling, and consult an ENT specialist for pronounced symptoms.
Dietary advice
Eat regular meals, reduce intake of high salt, strong tea, and caffeine, and quit smoking and limit alcohol.
