Reactive Arthritis

Overview

Reactive arthritis is an inflammatory, sterile arthritis that develops following an infection at another site, such as the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract. The triggering infection has usually resolved by the time arthritis appears, and the causative organism cannot be cultured from the joint.

Symptoms

• Joint swelling and pain
• Urethritis
• Conjunctivitis
• Asymmetric lower limb arthritis

Treatment

NSAIDs are the mainstay for symptom relief; antibiotics target the preceding infection, and antirheumatic drugs are used when necessary.

Dietary advice

A light, balanced diet with attention to food hygiene and ample vitamins and quality protein.
