Overview

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle is impaired. Symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness that can occur at any time, and about 70% of patients also experience sudden muscle weakness called cataplexy.

Treatment

Schedule sensible naps, use wake-promoting drugs to reduce sleepiness, and add anti-cataplexy medication.

Eat regular meals, avoid a heavy lunch, and reduce reliance on caffeine.
