Atelectasis
PulmonologyOverview
Atelectasis is the collapse or incomplete expansion of part or all of a lung, causing loss of lung volume. It may result from airway obstruction, compression, or reduced surfactant, leading to impaired gas exchange.
Symptoms
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Cough
- Cyanosis
Treatment
Address the underlying cause to relieve airway obstruction, encourage deep breathing and expectoration, and perform bronchoscopy or surgery when needed.
Dietary advice
Eat a high-protein nutritious diet and drink plenty of water to help clear sputum.
