Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease

Overview

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a rare inherited disorder of the peripheral nerves. It causes progressive weakness and muscle atrophy of the legs, usually beginning between ages 20 and 40.

Symptoms

• Foot drop
• Muscle atrophy
• Weakness when walking
• Reduced sensation

Treatment

Management is mainly rehabilitation, bracing, and foot care to slow functional decline; orthopedic surgery may be done for severe deformities.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet with adequate protein and control weight to reduce the load on the legs.
