Lung Abscess

Overview

Lung abscess is a localized collection of pus within the lung tissue, typically caused by infection. It is characterized by cough, chest pain, fever, and foul-smelling sputum, and in severe cases coughing up pus and blood.

Symptoms

• High fever
• Cough
• Foul-smelling purulent sputum
• Chest pain
• Fatigue

Treatment

Early adequate antibiotics combined with postural drainage to remove pus, with surgery for large abscesses or those that fail to resolve.

Dietary advice

High-calorie, high-protein diet, plenty of fluids, and avoidance of spicy irritating foods.
