Rheumatic Heart Disease

Overview

Rheumatic heart disease is heart valve damage caused by rheumatic fever following streptococcal infection. It can lead to symptoms of heart failure and arrhythmia, and severe valve damage may require surgical repair or replacement.

Treatment

Prevent and control streptococcal infection and rheumatic activity, and manage heart failure and arrhythmias symptomatically. Severe valve disease requires valve repair or replacement surgery.

Dietary advice

Follow a low-salt, light, easily digestible diet ensuring high-quality protein and vitamins. Control fluid intake, avoid overeating, and quit smoking and limit alcohol.
