Rubella

Overview

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a disease caused by the rubella virus. Symptoms are usually mild, with a rash lasting about three days, often accompanied by swollen lymph nodes; infection in early pregnancy can cause congenital rubella syndrome or miscarriage.

Symptoms

• Low fever
• Pale red rash
• Postauricular lymph node swelling
• Occipital lymph node swelling
• Mild cough

Treatment

The condition is mostly self-limiting and managed with rest and symptomatic treatment; pregnant women, especially in early pregnancy, should take special precautions to protect the fetus.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to supplement vitamins, and avoid spicy and irritating foods.
