Overview

Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, mainly caused by bacterial infection, chemical irritants, or physical injury. It can be life-threatening if not treated promptly and presents with severe pain, abdominal distension, and fever.

Symptoms

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Abdominal wall rigidity
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting

Treatment

Withhold food with gastrointestinal decompression and treat infection, actively manage the primary lesion, and most cases require surgery to remove the infection source.

Dietary advice

Once the condition is controlled, gradually resume from a liquid diet with bland, easily digestible foods.
