Anal Fistula

Overview

An anal fistula is a chronic infectious tract between the anal canal and the skin around the anus. It usually arises as a chronic sequel of a perianal or perirectal abscess. Fistulas do not resolve spontaneously and generally require surgical treatment.

Symptoms

• Perianal discharge of pus
• Localized pain
• Itching
• Recurrent swelling and redness

Treatment

Anal fistulas generally require surgery, with incision or seton placement to clear the tract; keep the area clean afterward.

Dietary advice

A light diet with plenty of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables; avoid spicy foods and alcohol.
