Overview

A perianal abscess is an acute purulent infection of the soft tissue around the anus, arising from infection of the anal glands. It presents with painful perianal swelling and may progress to an anal fistula if not properly treated.

Symptoms

  • Painful perianal redness and swelling
  • Restlessness when sitting or lying
  • Fever
  • Local hard lump

Treatment

Once diagnosed, early surgical incision and drainage should be performed, with antibiotics to control infection and sitz baths and dressing changes afterward.

Dietary advice

A light, easily digestible diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables; avoid spicy foods and alcohol.
