Common Cold

Pulmonology

Overview

The common cold is a self-limiting viral upper respiratory infection that usually resolves in 5–7 days. It spreads mainly by droplets and contact.

Symptoms

  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Low-grade fever

Treatment

Mainly symptomatic care with rest and plenty of fluids; antipyretic/analgesics can relieve symptoms. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral colds and are not routinely recommended.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of warm water and eat light meals. Vitamin-C-rich fruits such as oranges and kiwi are helpful; avoid greasy and spicy foods.
