Testicular Torsion
UrologyOverview
Testicular torsion occurs when the spermatic cord that suspends the testicle twists, cutting off the testicle's blood supply. It causes sudden severe testicular pain, most commonly in adolescents, and may be accompanied by a higher-riding testicle and vomiting.
Symptoms
- Sudden severe testicular pain
- Scrotal swelling
- Nausea and vomiting
- Elevated testicle
- Lower abdominal pain
Treatment
This is a urological emergency requiring prompt manual detorsion or emergency surgical detorsion and fixation to salvage the testicle.
Dietary advice
Light, easily digestible diet after surgery, eating plenty of vegetables and fruits to keep bowels regular.
