Leptospirosis

Overview

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Leptospira bacteria. It may be asymptomatic or present with mild headache, muscle pain, and fever, up to severe pulmonary hemorrhage or meningitis; with jaundice, renal failure, or bleeding it is known as Weil's disease.

Symptoms

• High fever
• Headache
• Generalized muscle aches
• Calf muscle tenderness
• Conjunctival congestion
• Fatigue

Treatment

Treatment centers on early administration of sensitive antibiotics combined with symptomatic support, with hospitalization and comprehensive care for severe cases involving the liver, kidneys, or lungs.

Dietary advice

During the febrile phase eat a light, easily digestible diet and drink plenty of water; during recovery strengthen nutrition to promote physical recovery.
