Bone Cyst

Overview

A bone cyst is a benign, localized cyst-like lesion of bone, with a fibrous membrane wall enclosing a cavity of serous or serum-like fluid. Simple bone cysts occur at the metaphysis of long bones in children and adolescents, especially the proximal humerus and femur. They are often asymptomatic but may cause pain and swelling, and are frequently discovered after a pathological fracture.

Symptoms

• Localized dull pain
• Swelling
• Pathological fracture
• Limited movement

Treatment

Small asymptomatic cysts may be observed with follow-up; symptomatic cysts or those at risk of fracture require surgical curettage and bone grafting.

Maintain balanced nutrition with adequate calcium and protein to promote bone health.
