Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (IgA Vasculitis)

Overview

Henoch-Schönlein purpura, also known as IgA vasculitis, is a common vasculitis syndrome in childhood and adolescence. Due to infection, certain drugs, or allergy, immune complexes form and deposit in the capillaries of the upper dermis, causing vasculitis that can involve the skin, joints, gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys. Common features include purpura, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, joint pain, hematuria, and kidney disease.

Symptoms

• Purpura on the lower limbs
• Joint swelling and pain
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Hematuria

Treatment

Rest, avoid allergen exposure, and use symptomatic treatment; kidney involvement requires specialist follow-up and treatment.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland diet during the acute phase, avoid allergenic and spicy irritating foods, and ensure adequate nutrition.
