Osteochondroma

Overview

Osteochondroma is a common benign bone tumor arising on the outer surface of long bones, consisting of a bony outgrowth capped with cartilage. It usually develops in adolescents and stops growing when bone growth is complete.

Symptoms

• Painless mass
• Local protrusion
• Occasional pressure pain

Treatment

Usually a benign tumor; asymptomatic cases are monitored, while surgical excision is done for enlarging masses, nerve or vessel compression, or functional impairment.

Dietary advice

Eat a normal balanced diet with adequate protein and produce, and no special restrictions.
