Bone Hyperplasia (Osteophytes)
OrthopedicsOverview
Bone hyperplasia refers to excessive growth of bone that can produce bony outgrowths (osteophytes). It occurs in many musculoskeletal disorders, commonly affecting the spine (especially the lumbar and cervical regions), shoulders, and knees, and can cause nerve irritation or limit joint movement.
Symptoms
- Joint pain
- Stiffness
- Limited movement
- Swelling
- Friction sensation
Treatment
Managed mainly with symptomatic pain relief, physical therapy, and moderate functional exercise; surgery may be considered when symptoms severely affect daily life.
Dietary advice
Maintain a balanced diet with appropriate calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and control weight to reduce joint load.
