Huntington's Disease

Overview

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder in which an abnormal HTT gene causes degeneration of neurons in the striatum and other brain regions. It is characterized by progressive chorea, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbance.

Symptoms

• Choreic movements
• Cognitive decline
• Emotional disturbance
• Unsteady walking
• Difficulty swallowing

Treatment

Treatment is currently symptomatic, using drugs to control choreic movements and psychiatric symptoms alongside rehabilitation and nursing care.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-calorie, easy-to-swallow diet in small frequent meals to prevent choking and weight loss.
