Pityriasis Versicolor

Overview

Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is a common superficial skin infection caused mainly by Malassezia yeasts. It presents as round patches of altered pigmentation with fine, bran-like scaling, most often on the chest and back.

Symptoms

• Round pigmented patches
• Fine bran-like scaling
• Hypo- or hyperpigmentation
• Common on chest and back
• Mild itching

Treatment

Caused by Malassezia infection; treated with topical antifungals such as ketoconazole shampoo, with oral antifungals for severe cases.

Dietary advice

A light diet avoiding greasy foods; keep the skin clean and dry.
