Synovitis
OrthopedicsOverview
Synovitis is inflammation of the synovium lining a synovial joint. It often causes pain, especially during joint movement, and the joint usually swells due to accumulation of synovial fluid. It may be associated with arthritis, lupus, and gout, and long-term synovitis can cause joint degeneration.
Symptoms
- Joint swelling
- Pain
- Effusion
- Limited movement
- Sensation of warmth
Treatment
Managed mainly with rest and immobilization, physical therapy, and symptomatic anti-inflammatory pain relief; significant effusion can be aspirated, along with treatment of the underlying cause.
Dietary advice
Maintain a balanced, light diet and control weight to reduce joint load.
