Septic Arthritis

Overview

Septic arthritis is an acute infection within a joint, usually caused by bacteria, leading to inflammation and joint destruction. It presents with a red, swollen, painful joint, fever, and limited movement, and is a medical emergency.

Symptoms

• Red, swollen joint
• Severe pain
• Fever
• Limited movement

Treatment

Start adequate doses of antibiotics as early as possible, with joint aspiration drainage or surgical washout to remove pus; immobilize the limb in the acute phase and begin timely rehabilitation.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-protein, high-vitamin diet to aid recovery, drink plenty of fluids, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
