Ascariasis

Overview

Ascariasis is a disease caused by the roundworm parasite Ascaris. More than 85% of cases, especially with few worms, are asymptomatic. As worm numbers increase, symptoms may appear, initially difficulty breathing and fever, followed by abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Children are most often infected, and it can impair their weight gain, cause malnutrition, and lead to learning problems. Infection occurs by ingesting food or water containing worm eggs from feces. The WHO recommends albendazole, mebendazole, levamisole, or pyrantel pamoate for treatment.

• Poor appetite

• Nausea
• Teeth grinding

Treatment

Take anthelmintic medication under medical guidance, maintain food hygiene, and seek prompt care if complications arise.

Dietary advice

Maintain food hygiene, wash raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly, wash hands before meals and after using the toilet, and eat a balanced diet.
