Respiratory Failure

Pulmonology

Overview

Respiratory failure is a clinical syndrome of severe impairment of pulmonary ventilation and/or gas exchange from various causes, resulting in hypoxemia with or without carbon dioxide retention at rest breathing room air. It is a functional disorder rather than a disease and may result from lung disease or complicate various other conditions.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Cyanosis
  • Restlessness
  • Impaired consciousness

Treatment

Actively treat the underlying disease, keep the airway clear and provide appropriate oxygen therapy, and give mechanical ventilation support when needed.

Dietary advice

Ensure adequate calories and protein, small frequent meals, and avoidance of excess carbohydrates that increase breathing load.
