Interstitial Nephritis

Overview

Interstitial nephritis, also called tubulointerstitial nephritis, is inflammation affecting the interstitium surrounding the kidney tubules. It may be acute, with sudden onset, or chronic and persistent, ultimately leading to renal failure.

Symptoms

• Fatigue
• Polyuria
• Edema
• Low-grade fever
• Elevated serum creatinine

Treatment

Discontinue suspected causative drugs, treat the underlying disease, and use corticosteroids and renal support when necessary.

Dietary advice

Light, low-salt diet, avoiding nephrotoxic drugs and ensuring adequate fluid intake.
