Hepatitis A

Overview

Hepatitis A is an acute liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Many cases have few or no symptoms, especially in younger patients. The incubation period is about two to six weeks, and symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, fever, and abdominal pain. It is most commonly transmitted through food or water contaminated with an infected person's feces.

Treatment

It is mostly a self-limiting disease, managed primarily with rest and supportive symptomatic care. Attention to isolation and food hygiene is important, and vaccination is effective for prevention.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet, ensure adequate calories and vitamins, strictly abstain from alcohol, and pay attention to food hygiene.
