Contact Dermatitis

Overview

Contact dermatitis is a well-demarcated acute or chronic inflammatory reaction of the skin or mucous membranes at the site of contact with certain external substances. It may be caused by allergy (allergic contact dermatitis) or by external irritation (irritant contact dermatitis), with the latter being more common. Patch testing is a common diagnostic method.

Symptoms

• Erythema
• Itching
• Blisters
• Burning sensation
• Swelling

Treatment

Management focuses on removing and avoiding the offending substance and applying topical anti-inflammatory creams, with oral antihistamines for significant itching.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, avoid spicy and irritating foods, and have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
