Overview

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder in which the immune system damages the peripheral nerves, causing acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and rapidly progressive muscle weakness. Typical early symptoms are abnormal sensations and weakness starting in the limbs.

Symptoms

  • Symmetric limb weakness
  • Numbness
  • Reduced tendon reflexes
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sensory disturbance

Treatment

Give early intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange, with respiratory support and rehabilitation for severe cases.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-protein, high-calorie diet, and give fluids or tube feeding when swallowing is difficult.
