Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

Overview

Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare neurodegenerative disease characterized by abnormal tau protein deposition in the brain. It presents with vertical supranuclear gaze palsy, postural instability with falls, rigidity, and cognitive decline.

Symptoms

• Postural instability
• Frequent falls
• Impaired eye movement
• Slurred speech

Treatment

There is no effective drug; management is mainly supportive with rehabilitation, focusing on fall prevention and managing complications such as swallowing difficulty.

Dietary advice

Favor soft foods, adjust food texture for those with swallowing difficulty, and ensure adequate calories and protein.
